FAQ
Straight answers for shop owners and shoppers.
What is Janta Kirana?
Janta Kirana is a marketplace for neighbourhood grocery shops. Shops use Janta POS to bill at the counter, manage stock and khata, and take online orders. Shoppers use the Janta Kirana app to order from shops near them for delivery or pickup.
Who is Janta POS for?
Kirana and general stores of any size, from a one-person counter to a shop with a manager, cashiers and delivery staff. Each person gets their own sign-in and you decide what each role can do.
How much does it cost?
The apps are free to download. For plans for your shop, please talk to us. Any plan, bill and fee is shown clearly in the app, and fee increases are always announced in advance.
How does my shop join?
Apply on our Join page with your mobile number. After a quick phone check, tell us about your shop. Janta's team reviews every application. Once approved, you get an activation code to start Janta POS on your phone.
Do I need a computer or special hardware?
No. Janta POS runs on an Android phone or tablet, or in a browser. A Bluetooth thermal printer and a barcode scanner are optional; the phone camera can scan barcodes too.
What happens when the internet goes down?
Keep billing. Bills, khata entries and expenses are saved on the phone and sync automatically when you are back online. A few things need the internet, such as the day close, practice bills and switching cashier.
Which printers work?
Bluetooth thermal receipt printers that use ESC/POS, on 58 mm or 80 mm paper, including Bluetooth LE printers. On the web version you can print through your computer's print dialog. If your printer gives trouble, tell us its make and model in Support.
Can I keep udhaar (credit) for customers?
Yes. Put a full or part bill on a customer's khata, take payments in cash or UPI, set credit limits, share statements and send WhatsApp reminders with a UPI link for the exact balance.
Is Janta POS ready for GST?
Yes. It makes tax invoices for regular GST shops and bills of supply for composition or unregistered shops, with consecutive numbers per financial year. It also makes credit notes, B2B invoices and monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B figures. Always check the figures with your CA before filing; Janta does not file returns for you.
My shop is not registered for GST. Can I still use it?
Yes. Your bills are bills of supply with no tax lines. If you register later, add your GSTIN and the app switches to tax invoices.
Can I bring my items from another billing app?
Yes. Import an Excel (.xlsx) or CSV file. Janta recognises item exports from Vyapar and myBillBook and any spreadsheet with item names and prices. You see a full preview before anything is saved. You can also add items from Janta's catalogue or a starter pack.
Can I try it before real customers come?
Yes. Switch on practice mode. Practice bills are clearly marked, never change stock and never count in sales, reports or tax figures. Clear them with one tap when you are ready.
How do shoppers pay?
Cash on delivery or at pickup, or by UPI straight to the shop's own UPI ID from any UPI app. Online payments through Janta are coming soon.
Does Janta hold my shop's money?
No. Cash and UPI payments go directly to the shop. Janta never holds that money.
Who delivers the orders?
The shop does, with its own staff. Each shop sets its delivery area, charge, free-delivery amount and minimum order, or offers pickup only. Every handover is confirmed with the shopper's 4-digit code.
How will I know when a new order comes in?
While Janta POS is open on screen, a full-screen "New order!" alert plays a chime and vibrates until someone handles it. On the web app you can also turn on browser notifications. Phone notifications while the Android app is closed are coming soon, so keep Janta POS open during shop hours.
Can my staff use their own phones?
Yes. Add a staff member and hand them a one-time activation code. They choose their own PIN on their own phone. You choose what their role can do, and you can deactivate them any time.
Which languages are supported?
English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Odia, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese, Maithili and Konkani, in both apps. Receipts print in English by default, with an option to print in every script.
How do I find shops near me?
Open Janta Kirana and share your location, or type your pincode or area. You will see the shops that serve you, with distance and opening hours. If there is no shop near you yet, ask to be told when one joins, or invite your local kirana.
Is there a delivery fee?
Each shop sets its own delivery charge and an amount above which delivery is free. The cart shows the exact fee before you order, and pickup has no delivery fee.
Can I cancel an order?
Yes. Until the shop accepts, you can cancel at once. After that, cancelling is a request the shop decides. An order can't be cancelled once it is delivered. If a coupon was used, you can use it again.
What if an item is missing or damaged?
Open the delivered order and tap "Report a problem with an item". Choose the items, say what went wrong and add photos. The shop answers in the app and Janta Support can see it too.
How do refunds work?
For orders paid in cash or by UPI to the shop, the shop gives the money back to you directly, and any refund it records shows on your order. If you need help, raise a request in the app.
What do you do with my data?
We use your phone number, addresses and orders to run your orders. Ads based on your orders and offer notifications stay off unless you turn them on, and only for people 18 or older. You can download your data, delete your account and name a nominee from the app.
Will I see ads?
Some shops pay to be featured. Every ad is marked "Ad" and you can tap it to see who paid. There are never ads in your cart or at checkout. Our "How we rank" page explains how shops, products and ads are ordered.
Is there an iPhone app?
Use the web app in Safari or any browser and add it to your home screen. The Android apps can be downloaded from this site.
Can I pause or end my shop's plan?
Yes. The owner can pause the plan for whole calendar months or end it from the app. The app shows exactly what happens and when, before you confirm.
How do I get help?
Raise a request from the app: Help & support in Janta Kirana, or Support in Janta POS.
